The Hopes

The Hopes
Year 2020

This artwork reflects on the mental health challenges brought on by the pandemic-induced lockdowns and restrictions. Craft and making can serve as a therapeutic outlet during difficult times, and The Hopes pottery set was created with this in mind. Using air-dry-clay and a 3D pen, the artist engaged in a meditative process of forming an interior structure that offered a sense of calm and focus during a time of heightened anxiety.

In addition to the therapeutic benefits of the making process, The Hopes also reflect a sense of adaptation and resourcefulness. The decorative surface of the pottery is made from household maintenance products such as silicone glue and tile grout, highlighting the need to make do with what is available during times of scarcity. The bright and cheerful colors and organic patterns on the surface of the pottery evoke a sense of excitement and hope for the future, despite the challenges of the present moment. Overall, The Hopes serve as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of creative expression.
