The Glimmering  light of the 20s
Year 2021

This project utilizes pewter, a malleable metal alloy that was commonly used for decorative items and tableware in Europe during the Middle Ages. With its mirror-like quality and softness, it became an ideal material to work with during the challenging times of the pandemic, from the comfort of one's own home.

The project was created as part of the Pewter Live Competition 2021, under the theme of 'Roaring 20s.' The artwork pays homage to the era of dramatic social change, where the rapid economic growth turned many middle-class individuals into millionaires within a few years. Parties, music, and mass culture emerged, and Art Deco became the symbol of this era. The use of pewter in this project alludes to the historical significance of the material and its place in the decorative arts, while the theme of the Roaring 20s captures the spirit of social and cultural upheaval of the time.

This artwork explores the concept of shininess and its associations with luxury and wealth. The reflective quality of high-value materials such as precious metals gives a sense of visual attraction and mutability, as the surface changes in response to surrounding light.

The Glimmering Light of the 20s is a representation of this reflective ability of Pewter in the form of a functional object - a fan that acted as a status symbol during the 1920s. The fan's weaving pattern creates a mesmerizing effect as light reflection moves randomly from one part to another, harmonizing with the user's movement. The artwork's geometrical pattern references the Art Deco movement that emerged during this era, emphasizing the shiny surface and celebrating the versatility and beauty of Pewter as a material. The artwork serves as a tribute to the historical significance of Pewter and its place in the decorative arts, while also exploring the aesthetic qualities of shininess and light reflection.
